Within the FCT-Group, the two sister- companies FCT Ingenieurkeramik GmbH and FCT Hartbearbeitungs GmbH are active in high-performance ceramics:
FCT Ingenieurkeramik GmbH (“FCT-I”), located in Rauenstein, Germany, produces customized components made of silicon nitride ceramics and composites used for aluminum foundry engineering, wear protection, electronics, metrology, and metal working. Specialties are highly rigid, complex, lightweight constructions for precision optics, sputter targets made of various ceramic and powder- metallurgical materials, as well as wear- and damage- resistant friction linings made of Creinforced SiC. For the production of components and for external services modern equipment is used, including in particular, large-volume, cold isostatic- and uniaxial- presses, hot- presses, and sintering units suitable for vacuum and protective gas operation at overpressures of up to 2.000 bar (HIP).
FCT Hartbearbeitungs GmbH (“FCT-H”), located in Sonneberg, Germany, has an extensive pool of machinery suitable for the green machining and, in particular, the hard- and finish- machining of ceramic materials and components. This machinery is used for the own production of ceramic components as well as for external service orders. The range of ceramic components produced by FCT-H by its own production lines comprises from small, high-precision parts, in particular made of zirconium oxide (ZrO2 /Y-TZP) and alumina-toughened zirconia (“ATZ”), to large-sized parts with complex shapes made of sintered silicon carbide (SiC resp. S-SiC). Zirconia based ceramics can also offered as post-HIPed grades with extraordinary high strength values (Y-TZP: 1.400 MPa, ATZ: 1.700 MPa)
Within both companies, molding is done more or less exclusively by greenmachining of pressed parts, applying modern 5-axis machinery. According to the size of machinery, equipment and sintering furnaces available, the maximum sizes of ceramic parts which can be produced are for SiC Ø 600 x 1.250 mm, for Si3N4 Ø 400 x 1.250 mm and for zirconia based materials nearly Ø 400 x 400 mm.
These data show that FCT offers as a specialty ceramic components in sizes and complexity, which were not available commercially some years ago. They were widely used in mechanical, chemical and thermal engineering, exposed to high mechanical stress and / or intensive abrasive, corrosive and thermal conditions.
FCT is also engaged in several R&D-projects, focusing mainly on the improvement of high-performance ceramic materials and their production technologies as well as on the qualification of ceramic components for new, innovative applications.
Among the broad fields of applications, examples are: bushings, sliding bearings, seal rings and gear wheels (SiC), calendar rolls, mill-liners and rotors for high-energy mills (SiC, Si3N4, ZrO2), heat-exchanger, furnace furniture and jigs for high-temperature applications (SiC), riser- and heating tubes, thermocouple protection sheets and valve components for Alfoundries (Si3N4, SiC), complex shaped camera housings for highly precise optical structures (Si3N4 , SiC), rolls and tools for metal working (Si3N4, ZrO2), tiny, precise parts and blades for analytics and medical devices (ZrO2), brake pads for elevators (C/C-SiC) etc. The excellent tribological behavior of SiC also under deficient lubrication and dry-running conditions can further be improved by a coating with polycrystalline diamond (PCD, external cooperation). To demonstrate our capabilities, the enclosed figures show newly developed highly precise ceramic gear wheels for pumps as well as gearboxes, made of SiC, Si3N4 or ZrO2 and a large-sized sintered SiC mill-liner, probably the biggest SiC part sintered worldwide till now, with Ø 500 x 700 mm and a weight of 70 kg.
